Fire Insurance Information

The Washington Survey and Rating Bureau (WSRB) sets the district's fire protection classification. Most insurance companies use this classification to set fire insurance premiums rates for property owners. Protection Class ratings for individual dwelling and commercial properties are available free of charge by calling WSRB Customer Service at 206-217-0101 or emailing customerservice@wsrb.com.

Benton City: Class 3
In 2016, Fire District 2’s Benton City area rating upgraded from a Class 5 to Class 3. In 2022 the City rating remains at Class 3. This rating is effective September 1, 2022 and lasts for 6 years.

Benton County Fire District: Class 4
In 2022, Protection Classification (PC) for Benton County Fire District 2 has improved from PC 6 to PC 4. This rating is effective September 1, 2022 and lasts for 6 years.

A lower Class rating can equate to lower insurance premiums for residents and business owners depending on their respective insurance carriers. Residents and business owners are encouraged to contact their insurance agents to determine the relative effect this new protection classification will have on their insurance premiums.

The WSRB rates cities and their fire departments by risk level between 1 and 10 (1 indicates exemplary fire protection capabilities; 10 indicates insufficient capabilities). Many insurance companies use the WSRB designation to assess insurance premium rates for homeowners and commercial properties. Protection Class designation is determined by WSRB’s assessment of the fire department’s ability to suppress fires. Categories include:

  • Fire Department – distribution of fire stations, engine and ladder companies, pumping capacity, apparatus maintenance, department personnel staffing and training

  • Water Supply – adequacy of firefighting water supply including water flow, hydrant locations and system maintenance

  • Emergency Communications – evaluation of the community’s 911 system ability to receive and handle calls for emergency services

  • Fire Safety Control – fire prevention, public education and building code enforcement

WSRB recommends property owners contact their insurance agents if you have questions about your premiums.
