Volunteer Firefighter Program

Benton County Fire Protection District #2 deeply values its volunteer team in serving the City of Benton City and surrounding rural communities in southeastern Washington State. We welcome dedicated individuals to join our family—providing critical support and serving our residents with pride and professionalism.

Role and Responsibilities

As a Volunteer Firefighter, you'll respond to a wide range of emergency situations—wildland and structure fires, vehicle accidents, medical calls, and natural disasters. After joining as a probationary member, you will receive comprehensive, district-funded training and gain experience through hands-on service and ongoing drills.

Expect to participate in:

  • Fire suppression and rescue response.
  • Emergency medical and ambulance service.
  • Station tours, public safety education, and community outreach.
  • Pre-fire planning and routine station & apparatus maintenance.

Weekly training is held every Wednesday night, complemented by opportunities to attend training outside the district with travel, lodging, and meals covered or reimbursed.

Training & Development Opportunities

All required training is provided at no cost to program participants, including:

  • 144-hour Structural Firefighting Academy.
  • 36-hour Wildland Firefighting Course (NWCG FF2).
  • 140-hour EMT-Basic Certification Course.

Additional benefits include live-burn scenarios, mutual aid drills, and access to IFSAC-accredited certifications. Training is guided by experienced officers who serve as mentors throughout your journey.

Requirements to Apply

  • Must live within District #2 boundaries.
  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Hold a valid Washington State driver’s license, and be insurable by the district.
  • Provide reliable transportation.
  • Successfully complete:
    • Interview
    • Background and driving record check
    • Physical agility test
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude, strong motivation, and reliable teamwork.

Ongoing Expectations

Once accepted, Volunteer Firefighters are required to:

  • Attend at least 60% of training meetings.
  • Respond to a minimum of 25% of emergency incidents.
  • Complete a one‑year evaluated probationary period.
