Did You Know Your Smart Phone Can Help Save A Life?
PulsePoint enables subscribers who are CPR trained to be alerted on their Smart Phone to a cardiac arrest in a public location the same time emergency responders are notified.
The free PulsePoint app can be found in the Apple App store, or in Android Apps on Google Play. Go to https://www.pulsepoint.org/
PulsePoint will give the citizen responder mapping directions, notify them of any automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in at area and provide the radio traffic of the emergency responders.
Early CPR is the key if the victim is to survive. When a person goes into cardiac arrest, their heart, brain and other vital organs no longer receive oxygen. Researchers have found that without early CPR within the first 3 to 5 minutes, victims’ chances of survival are dramatically reduced.
You only need to be willing to do “Hands-Only” CPR. According to the American Heart Association, Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR in the first minutes of cardiac arrest.
Subscribers can also view active fire and emergency medical incidents and monitor emergency radio traffic

In partnership with local fire departments and area hospitals; Benton County Fire Protection District 2 has been working to implement PulsePointTM- A cell phone based web application to inform the community when Citizen CPR is needed.
“Cardiac arrest – an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs - is a leading cause of death. Each year, over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States.” (AHA)
- When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby.
- According to the American Heart Association, about 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.
“There have been studies that show cardiac arrest survival rates are directly related to early and effective CPR” said John Derderian- Firefighter Paramedic. “If we can get citizens trained, and able to provide CPR until professional help can arrive, we can drastically improve cardiac arrest survival rates.”
PulsePointTM is a service that does just that. Although PulsePointTM does not provide CPR training, the intent of the app is to provide citizen responders a way of being informed when their help is needed. Once downloaded onto a smart phone, the application automatically informs the user when CPR is needed within a determined radius of where that user is- as well as the closest public Automatic External Defibrillator (AED.)
