The primary goal of Benton County Fire Protections District 2’s Volunteer Resident Firefighter Program is to promote the knowledge of basic operating principles of the fire and emergency service through day-to-day operations, hands-on experience, and classroom time. Assist the district with staffing, maintaining and operating various emergency apparatus. Promote the social, intellectual, and physical welfare of members, while creating a family atmosphere with closer association among its members. Provide experience, training, and mentoring to assist Volunteer Resident Firefighters with the skills and knowledge to obtain employment and succeed in a fire service career.

Upon completion of initial training Volunteer Resident Firefighters are assigned to one of three shifts to gain experience. Each shift works approximately five 48- hour shifts per month. Volunteer Resident Firefighters assist in medical emergencies and fire suppression services, as well as obtain training, participate in public education, conduct pre-fire plans, and station maintenance.


As a Volunteer Resident Firefighter the following is expected of you.

  1. Obtain a Washington EMT-B certification within one year of employment.
  2. IFSAC Firefighter 1 curriculum within one year of employment.
  3. Maintain Benton County Fire District 2 resident quarters as primary physical address.
  4. Serve a 12 month evaluated probation period.
  5. Be responsible for assigned duty shifts except for illness, emergencies, prearranged absences.
  6. Attend and participate in on/off duty Wednesday night fire drills and all training events unless absence is prearranged.
  7. Respond to emergency calls both on/off duty.
  8. Participate in station tours, fire safety, and EMS education classes.
  9. Be a team member assigned to one of three 48 hour shifts.
  10. Be dependable and responsible with integrity.
  11. Work hard and strive to learn in all activities and life experiences.

There are many benefits that are given with these positions including rent free housing. Housing is located at the fire station and is shared with 8 other Volunteer Resident Firefighters. Resident housing includes kitchen, laundry facilities, computer, fax, printers, cable TV, and fully equipped fitness center. Other benefits include tuition reimbursement for Fire Science or Paramedic, monthly living stipend,  reimbursement on/off duty, fire/EMS training and certifications, and generous PTO.


How to become a Volunteer Resident Firefighter

  • Complete and submit application

  • Complete a 2 day ride along
  • Pass driving record and background check
  • Pass a medical physical and drug screen


Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years old by beginning of residency
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Possesses and maintain a valid WA drivers license and be insurable by the district carrier
  • Read, write, and communicate the English language


Desirable Qualifications

  • EMT Basic or higher
  • Firefighter 1 or higher
  • NWCG Wildland FF2
